Top of the table Stockport County extended their perfect start to life in League One with a confident 2-0 victory over Bristol Rovers at Edgeley Park.

Coming into this fixture top of League One, County appeared immediately eager to push on after their previous triumph away at Blackpool and started in the same positive vain as they had performed in the opening two matches of the campaign.

It was a first half mostly dominated by The Hatters, despite some shakiness early on when playing out from the back. Jack Diamond showed promise for the home side with an early chance after cutting in from the right-hand side and dragging his shot just wide via a deflection. But it was through the brilliance of Aston Villa loanee and former Barcelona man Louie Barry that the Hatters found most of their joy. A long ball forward wasn’t dealt with by centre-half Clinton Mola and fortunately fell to Barry, who struck on the half volley and found the top right corner brilliantly. Stockport continued to dominate possession, repeatedly finding fortune down the left-hand side, which led to a frantic goal-line clearance and a near-miss for Kyle Wootton.

Rovers started the second half promisingly, growing more into the game as the half progressed, with chances coming through Bryant Bilongo who forced good defensive work from his opposing fullback Jay Mingi. Despite these efforts, however, Stockport added to their lead in the 62nd minute. New signing Oliver Norwood’s corner was floated to the back post and headed back across goal by Fraser Horsfall for man-of-the-match Wootton to stab home and cement victory.

The Pirates’ best chance of the game fell for substitute Scott Sinclair, as a floated ball from Joel Senior found the feet of the former Celtic man, who prodded over from close range to the delight of the Railway End. This victory sealed County’s third straight league win of the season and recorded their first win over Bristol Rovers since 2010.
