It was a cagey start to the first half, with half-chances at either end. Salford looked dangerous through set pieces whipped in from the left boot of Luke Garbutt, and the away side were denied only by the post after a deflected effort from Harry Clifton.
Doncaster’s veteran striker Billy Sharp then opened the scoring in the 21st minute, after breaking away from James Chester, dancing around the two Salford centre halves and slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. This follows Sharp’s 250th EFL goal at the weekend, when he found the net against Accrington Stanley from the bench.
Salford City’s set piece threat continued when Marcus Dakkers’ header was cleared off the line by Ephraim Yeboah, but that was The Ammies best chance of the half and Doncaster Rovers went into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

The home side looked to amend things at the break, bringing on Stephan Negru for his second appearance for the club.
The caginess continued for most of the second half, with Doncaster’s Ephraim Yeboah having the best of the chances early on; the striker was played through in behind but his near-post strike sailed over the bar.
Salford turned to the bench again in the 66th minute, bringing on the likes of Conor McAleny and Kelly N’mai, who showed promise in using his pace to stretch his opposition full-back down the left-hand side. The best of his deliveries found substitute Cole Stockton, whose shot was safely blocked from the centre of the box.

Grant McCann elected to bring on another goalscorer from the away side’s weekend win, as Luke Molyneux replaced Yeboah. It was the Rovers number seven that then sealed the game late on after linking up with fellow substitute Jordan Gibson and slotting the ball past Matt Young, despite the Salford keeper getting a hand on it.
Molyneux’s goal sealed an impressive win for Doncaster, who now progress to the second round of the Carabao Cup and are looking like strong contenders for the League Two title. As for Salford, they repeat their 2-0 loss against Port Vale at the weekend and are knocked out, but can be somewhat encouraged by their performance, with improvement coming especially from their set pieces.
