Chelsea’s resurgence under Enzo Maresca has sparked widespread debate. The Blues are playing some of their most exhilarating football in years, blending attacking verve with tactical discipline. Sitting third in the Premier League, level on points with Arsenal but trailing Liverpool by nine, Chelsea’s form suggests they are firmly in the top-four race. Yet the question remains: can they mount a serious title challenge this season?

Former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker remains unconvinced. Speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Daily podcast, he said, “I don't see them forcing themselves into a title argument. But they are definitely up there in that top-four conversation. They look like a team now - they look really good. Their attacking power is scary. They have so many options.”

Reo-Coker’s cautious optimism captures the dual nature of Chelsea’s progress: significant improvement but room for growth. For manager Enzo Maresca, the focus remains on steady development. After a dominant 3-0 win over Aston Villa, he reiterated, “We are not ready to compete with Liverpool, Arsenal, or City for many reasons. But the good thing is we are improving and soon we can be there.”
Nicolas Jackson: A Striker Transforming Chelsea

Central to Chelsea’s resurgence is Nicolas Jackson, whose transformation from a misfiring forward to a prolific match-winner has silenced critics. The 23-year-old Senegalese striker has already netted seven goals in 12 Premier League games this season. His performances in key fixtures, such as the recent 2-1 win over Leicester City where he scored one and assisted another, highlight his growing influence.

Last season, Jackson’s inconsistency and disciplinary issues raised doubts about his ability to lead Chelsea’s line. However, under Maresca’s guidance, he has found his rhythm. Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink placed Jackson among the league’s top strikers alongside Erling Haaland and Ollie Watkins, a testament to his remarkable turnaround.

Jackson’s pressing and work rate off the ball have been pivotal in Chelsea’s success. His ability to win possession high up the pitch has created numerous chances for teammates, while his hold-up play and willingness to battle defenders add another dimension to Chelsea’s attack.
Cole Palmer: The Premier League’s Best Player?

While Jackson’s form is impressive, Chelsea’s true talisman this season is undoubtedly Cole Palmer. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has emerged as one of the league’s most electrifying players, with many arguing he is the best in England right now. Jamie Carragher went so far as to declare, “He’s the best player in the Premier League,” after Palmer’s record-breaking performance against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Palmer scored four first-half goals against Brighton in just 19 minutes and 57 seconds, a feat never before achieved in Premier League history. His season tally now stands at eight goals and six assists in just thirteen league matches.
Tactical Revolution Under Maresca

One of the key reasons behind Palmer’s explosive form is Maresca’s tactical adjustments. Unlike Mauricio Pochettino, who frequently deployed Palmer as a right winger, Maresca has positioned him as a roaming No. 10. This shift has unlocked Palmer’s creativity, allowing him to operate in central areas where he can dictate play and exploit defensive gaps.

Palmer’s heat map from this season shows a significant increase in central activity compared to last year. This positional change has enabled him to be more involved in Chelsea’s attacks, whether making runs behind the defence, delivering incisive through-balls, or taking shots from dangerous areas.

Moreover, Maresca’s emphasis on direct, fast-paced football perfectly complements Palmer’s strengths. Chelsea lead the league in fast breaks (13) and rank second for both through-balls (20) and successful take-ons (57). These metrics underline their transition-heavy approach, which creates space for players like Palmer to thrive.

Palmer’s average touches per 90 minutes have dropped from 60.5 last season to 48.4 this term, reflecting a more decisive and impactful style of play. His 17 chances created this season - 10 more than any other Chelsea player - highlight his importance as the team’s creative fulcrum.
A Balanced Attack

Chelsea’s attacking resurgence isn’t limited to Palmer and Jackson. Noni Madueke has chipped in with three goals, while new signing Jadon Sancho appears rejuvenated after a slow start to his Stamford Bridge career. This multifaceted attack has made Chelsea the highest-scoring team in the league, with 26 goals in 13 matches.

Enzo Fernandez’s performances in midfield have also been crucial. The Argentine maestro provides balance, combining defensive solidity with progressive passing. Maresca has praised Fernandez’s ability to control games, calling him “fantastic” in his dual role on and off the ball.
The Road Ahead: Title or Top Four?

Despite their impressive form, Chelsea face significant hurdles in sustaining a title challenge. Liverpool’s dominance, Arsenal’s consistency, and Manchester City’s depth make the top spot a daunting target. Maresca himself acknowledges this, emphasizing the need for continued improvement.

Statistical models from Opta give Chelsea a 55.9% chance of finishing in the top four and a 75.8% chance of securing a top-five finish, which could qualify them for the Champions League under new UEFA rules. While these numbers suggest a promising trajectory, they also highlight the gap Chelsea must close to compete with the league’s elite.
Chelsea’s current form reflects a team in transition, blending youthful exuberance with tactical innovation. Players like Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer symbolise this new era, thriving under Maresca’s guidance. Palmer, in particular, has established himself as a generational talent, combining breathtaking skill with extraordinary productivity.

For now, the Blues may not be ready to challenge Liverpool or Manchester City for the Premier League crown. However, their trajectory points toward a bright future. With continued growth and consistency, Chelsea could soon re-establish themselves as genuine title contenders and one of Europe’s elite teams once again.

The road to Premier League glory is long, but under Maresca’s stewardship, Chelsea are firmly on the right path.
