‘the Lionesses have brought football home; now it’s down to the rest of us to make sure it stays here’. It was a call to action and a rallying cry to the public, urging it to channel the excitement of international women’s football into the domestic league. Many fans have kept their end of the bargain, but if structures are not put in place to further professionalise the game - and quickly - clubs run the risk of creating disillusioned fans who give up watching altogether.

"Corr anticipates that the U’s may be forced into a defensive role for much of the match, but with Bolton having lost their last two games, the U’s have a real chance of winning; as long as they take advantage of moments where Bolton are in transition and are efficient in the final third."

"There has been a long history of sexism towards female NFL fans. Whether it is Cris Collinsworth (ex-Cincinnati Bengals player turned NBC commentator) patronisingly claiming to be ‘blown away’ at the level of understanding some women he met had of the game, or the lack of decisive action multiple NFL teams have taken over reports of their players sexually harassing women, football has failed time and time again to be a welcoming space for female fans. The sudden interest in football from Swift’s predominantly female fan base has offered the NFL a valuable chance to deviate from history"

“Orwell’s claim that ‘international level sport is frankly mimic warfare’ does feel hyperbolic, but just the briefest scan of its historical context – the essay was written in 1945, on the back of a Soviet football team’s tour of Britain – can account for his strident wariness of sport’s hyper-nationalistic and combative tendencies.”

How President Erdogan's Political Machine Has Steamrolled Democracy In Turkish Football
"The Turkish football system, much like the country’s politics, stands on shaky ground, beset by corruption, controversy, and political entanglements. In recent years, the sport has become a battleground for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's political ambitions, serving as a platform for pro-Erdoğan propaganda and manipulation."

"It was not looking overly promising for Homerton 5 minutes before kick-off: only 8 players warming up, no goalkeeper, and half of those players warming up carrying a significant niggle. Kick-Off came and the reinforcements arrived meaning Homerton could field all eleven players, albeit with their left back in between the sticks. "

"It is a symptom, and a symbol, of the wider chokehold the Premier League has on the rest of English football, perpetuating vast financial inequality and contributing to clubs going out of business. This must be understood within the context of unprecedented financial discrepancies in the game. A study by Sheffield Hallam University in 2018 revealed the extent of the gap in revenue between the Premier League and EFL: the “collective revenue” of Premier League clubs was £3.3 billion, whereas in the Championship, League One, and League Two, it was much lower at £491 million, £148 million, and £78 million respectively."

“The crowd chanting his name clearly was not as appealing a sound as the jingle of coin sacks. He threw away all the love and credit he had with the fans for a high wage at Saudi club Al-Ittihad. He was only 24, and effectively ended his competitive career in exchange for millions a year. Having said that, I’m 20 and the contents of my evening involve needing to buy loo roll from Aldi tonight. But it does sadden me that we no longer have the loyal, one-club legends we used to.”

"The true essence of Wimbledon F.C., F.A. Cup champions, rests within A.F.C. Yet, before comparison to the heights of the 1990s, the newly found A.F.C must be given credit for rising up a much larger football pyramid than the one that stood before their predecessor in 1977. In their short history, the Wombles, with a nickname that has carried over from the ashes out of which the club emerged, have made some ground-breaking achievements."
